This specimen is the first book dedicated to the design and development of Bureau Brut’s character collection. At the same time, it is a specimen, a catalogue, an archive and a manifesto. It is placed in a historical tradition: that of the foundry catalogues published during the early 20th century. Like those, it presents characters and exposes a creative process while showcasing a way to think of typography. This book is also the testimony of a practice regarding character design as research work and experimentation.

Traditionally, a specimen is an object that we look at. But this object can also be read. The texts used to showcase the characters in paragraphs and running text are excerpts of The Art of the People, a lecture given by William Morris in 1879. As a major figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, Morris wonders about the condition of production, the role of the machine and the value of creative work. This text was written more than a century ago, but it still resonates today, especially in a time when artificial intelligence transforms tools and conditions of creation.

Ce spécimen est le premier ouvrage consacré à l’ensemble des caractères dessinés et distribués par Bureau Brut depuis sa création. À la fois spécimen, catalogue, archive et manifeste, ce livre s’inscrit dans la tradition des catalogues de fonderie du XXe siècle. Comme eux, il présente des caractères, documente une production et donne à voir une manière de concevoir la typographie. Mais il témoigne aussi d’une pratique : celle du dessin de caractères comme travail de recherche et d’expérimentation.

Un spécimen est traditionnellement un objet que l’on regarde. Ici, il est aussi un objet que l’on lit. Les textes utilisés pour montrer les caractères en paragraphe et en lecture courante sont extraits de The Art of the People, une conférence donnée par William Morris en 1879. Figure majeure du mouvement Arts and Crafts, Morris y interroge les conditions de production, la place de la machine et la valeur du travail créatif. Un texte écrit il y a plus d’un siècle, mais qui résonne particulièrement aujourd’hui, à l’heure où l’intelligence artificielle transforme à son tour les outils et les conditions de la création.
